The Transformation of HR into a Profit Center – Ms Priti Behrani, Sr Manager – Natwest Group
1. In light of the changing role of HR, why should students choose HR as a specialization?
The HR function is undergoing a transformation. I have witnessed major shifts in the way HR is valued over the last decade. Additionally, I have seen how HR professionals are bringing value to organizations with the help of technology backed by data and research. It is imperative that all students research the latest market trends, not just those related to HR. Instead, research market trends for the industry you would like to join. Once we have a complete understanding of the business, we can become HR Partners. In today’s organizations, HR is no longer seen as a ‘cost function,’ but rather as an integral part of people, culture, and strategy. That’s how pivotal HR is in real life.
2. What skills should students work on to become future HR practitioners?
It’s imperative that we understand the value we bring to the table as HR professionals. Unless we learn to blow our own trumpets, no one will. Secondly, as I mentioned above, it is of the utmost importance that we Human Resource Professionals know the basic business model. Not only does it help you link the dots and understand the root cause of the challenge your business is facing, but it also allows you to gain credibility with your clients. Joining the business as a partner will be of significant benefit to you. For any HR professional, research is essential. Take a look at HR trends in conjunction with other industry trends. Do not limit your analysis to HR trends – look at trends in technology, data, artificial intelligence, etc.
3. What memories do you cherish most from FIIB?
When I cross the FIIB college every morning, I am reminded of so many memories. Educating myself through faculty and peer learning has been instrumental to my success. Having reached senior manager level in a large MNC in 10 years was not something I ever expected! I owe it all to the faculty members!
4. Would you like to share any message with current college students?
I encourage you to think of FIIB as the start of a brand-new chapter in your life. Study hard and soak up every moment of your higher education knowing it will serve you for many decades. Make wonderful friends who will enrich your life in ways you cannot even imagine. At the end of these two years, the networks you will have built will not only help you professionally, but they will also benefit you personally. It’s your time to shine — seize it!
