Midlife Matters: Pankaj Rai on Redefining Balance, Fitness, and Fulfillment
Midlife often carries a reputation for being a period of decline, but Pankaj Rai sees it differently. As the Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Aditya Birla Group, Rai views midlife as a pivotal opportunity to reflect, grow, and redefine success. In a recent conversation, he shared how this phase has become a launchpad for transformation in both his personal and professional life. On December 14th, at TEDxFIIB Women, Rai will inspire audiences with his unique approach to thriving in midlife by balancing passion, data-driven insights, and purpose.
What does the theme of “Midlife Matters” mean to you, and why is this conversation essential in today’s societal and professional landscape?
“Midlife is a clarion call to action,” shares Rai. “It’s a time to embrace growth and challenge misconceptions. In today’s fast-paced world, midlife is often the most productive and dynamic phase of life. However, societal narratives tend to overshadow its potential.
For me, midlife represents renewal—a chance to thrive, not just survive. It’s about leveraging the experience and enthusiasm accumulated over decades to create something meaningful. This theme encourages us to view midlife as a phase of reinvention and opportunity rather than decline.”
How has midlife been a transformative phase in your personal or professional journey? What lessons can others draw from your experiences?
“My midlife journey has been a series of organic transformations. Living in Bangalore, I discovered a passion for fitness, embracing running and badminton. These activities have revitalized me physically and mentally.
At 55, I achieved my personal best in a marathon—not because I set out to break records, but because I remained consistent and committed to staying fit. This milestone symbolizes the untapped potential of midlife as a time for self-discovery and achieving goals you never imagined.”
What advice would you give to women balancing midlife changes while navigating their roles as parents and professionals?
“Midlife is a chance to recalibrate and create balance across various aspects of life—physical health, mental well-being, and financial security. Women, in particular, often carry disproportionate societal expectations, making it essential to prioritize balance.
For me, data-driven insights have been transformative. Understanding that I need eight hours of sleep, two balanced meals a day, and consistent exercise has helped me thrive. Applying the same principle to finances, I’ve created a plan tailored to my needs. Awareness and measurable goals are key to thriving during midlife.”
What practical strategies or tools would you recommend to help women navigate midlife transitions and create meaningful impacts in their lives and careers?
“Focus on five pillars for balance: sleep, exercise, diet, creative expression, and financial health. It’s not about perfect balance daily but aligning these aspects over time.
Start with disciplined habits—whether it’s practicing mindful eating, engaging in creative pursuits, or building financial independence. Small, consistent steps can lead to transformative changes, enabling women to navigate midlife with clarity and confidence.”
How do platforms like TEDxFIIB Women empower voices and ideas that inspire change, particularly in areas like midlife transformations and leadership?
“TEDxFIIB Women is more than a stage—it’s a community that celebrates resilience and reinvention. Platforms like this amplify diverse voices, inspiring listeners to view midlife as a phase of immense possibility.
Sharing stories through TEDx empowers others to break barriers, embrace growth, and connect with a collective spirit of change. For me, being part of this platform is an opportunity to inspire others to thrive and see midlife as a springboard for leadership and transformation.”
