FIIB Jaagriti Club is on a week-long E-Waste Drive campaign at FIIB Campus, New Delhi
October 29th, 2015
“The only thing that we can't recycle is wasted time, but for all other waste there is an option”.
Electronics industry is one of fastest growing manufacturing industry in India. But the increase in sales of electronic goods and their rapid obsolescence has resulted in generation of electronic waste, which is popularly known as e-waste. The e-waste has become a matter of concern because of the presence of toxic and hazardous substances present in electronic goods and if not properly managed, it can have adverse effects on environment and human health. As a responsible citizen we must give our E-Waste to authorized collectors for recycling and contribute in creating a sustainable environment around us.
The FIIB-Jaagriti Club, as a part of its campaign to spread sustainability practices among the students and the society at large, is organizing a week long E-Waste Collection Drive at the FIIB campus from 29th October to 5th November 2015.
The event commenced with great enthusiasm and buzz on 29th October. Knowledge on the importance of regulating E-Waste was shared by FIIB’s partner organization Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group.
e-bins were installed in the campus to collect electronic wastes such as switches, damaged phones, laptops, computer peripherals, calculators, watches, wires, headphones, transistors, torches, etc. can be dropped off in the E- bins.
According to a UN report last year, India is the fifth biggest producer of e-waste in the world, discarding 1.7 million tonnes of electronic and electrical equipment. E-waste is harmful to human health due to the presence of many toxic elements.
With lot of zest students at FIIB sneak out to collect discarded mobile phone batteries, torches, headphones and computer parts as part of a campaign to control the menace of e-waste.
All the e-waste collected would be handed over to Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, which will use it for recycling, component harvesting, reuse and creative work.
